Muffin – We kept fighting for her! Remember Muffin? She is the darling, tiny, tabby kitten who was found under a car only days old; she was cold to the touch, still had her umbilical cord, and only weighs two ounces. A gifted Town Cats’ foster mom steps in and we have our first miracle. Muffin thrives. Fast forward three months and little Muffin goes in for her routine spay surgery and disaster strikes. Muffin has a rare, severe allergic reaction to the anesthesia and she is dying. She cannot breathe on her own; she is crashing. We are told the devastating news: “It’s not good. We are losing her.” Some kitties need to be rescued more than once. Through our tears, we asked, “Please keep trying. She is just…

Homes Wanted: No-Kill shelter cares for cat What happens if your new baby is allergic to your longtime feline friend? Or the cheapest housing option doesn’t allow pets? How much can you afford to spend if he needs surgery or medication? These stressful situations require difficult decisions. Animal overpopulation and euthanasia rates worsen or improve depending upon the choices individuals make in tough situations like those. As these problems grow, local governments and concerned individuals create animal shelters to provide temporary homes for unwanted, abandoned, orphaned, and stray pets. Even at shelters, limited money and space means that healthy animals are often euthanized. Unless it’s a no-kill shelter. Meet Rita! Rita Wessel has been an active champion of community cats since 1999. For a person who claims to be a dog-person, that is an outstanding achievement and an admirable record of volunteering on behalf of cats. Rita says, "Once you start making a difference and you know you're making a difference, you can't stop." Back in 1998 when Rita still had her dog, Dearie, they found two kittens. She reached out to Rosi Mirko, the founder of Town Cats, and the kittens were adopted. In 1999 she started volunteering with Town Cats because "Once it's in your blood, you keep doing it." While working 25 years as an administrative assistant at FMC/United Defense/BAE Systems, she became highly organized and got enjoyment from creating order out of chaos. In…

Events and day to day! So far 2015 has been a fantastic year for adoptions at Town Cats, we have participated in two large scale adoption events and have had wonderful adoption results in each of our adoption centers. On  May 30th and 31st, we participated in Maddie's Pet Adoption Days which were an absolute whirlwind of activity. In the end, the team at Town Cats found 129 good cats good homes -- including some sweet, older cats such as Sophie, Tigger, and Velvet, and many darling, little kittens -- and we made many, many people happy.
