Vet’s Corner with Dr. Tiva: How to Transport Cats Fear Free

Does your cat hate going in their carrier? Does your cat shut down when they go to the vet? If so, you’re not alone. Unlike dogs, cats tend to be housebound, living most of their lives in a familiar place with familiar people. Think of how we socialize puppies: we ensure they meet lots of people, are exposed to umbrellas and vacuum cleaners, and go lots of places in the car. Dogs learn from an early age how to deal with various circumstances, especially travel in the human world. Compare that to a cat, who maybe only leaves the house once in a blue moon to go the vet. A carrier means getting car sick, going outside their comfort zone, and having terrible time getting poked at the vet. This…

September 11, 2018 By Nikita Lero Founded in 1997, Town Cats has been saving stray, abandoned, unwanted and feral cats in Santa Clara County, California, since day one and hopes to save even more with the help of The Jackson Galaxy Project’s Cat Pawsitive Pro (CPP). They had learned about CPP and its benefits when they looked into having Jackson Galaxy host an event at the shelter. Samantha Sullivan, Executive Director at Town Cats, explains just how important CPP is to their community and shelter. “There is nothing like this in the area and it truly will revolutionize the way we work harder to adopt cats,” says Sullivan. “By working closely with our network of shelters and implementing CPP, we will help these cats gain confidence and get them adopted,…

By Tom Hewitt Who is America’s best-known cat? Leaving aside fictional felines like Felix, Garfield, and the Cat in the Hat, the answer might be the unusual-looking Grumpy Cat, whom you may have seen online, sometimes featured with humorous captions. Grumpy Cat What a sourpuss! Actually, Grumpy Cat (real name Tardar Sauce) only looks grumpy— her appearance is caused by an underbite and feline dwarfism. She was born in 2012 and has been featured in advertising—she even has her own webpage, licensed merchandise, and social media presence. Lil Bub There is also Lil Bub, another current celebrity cat who starred in a 2013 documentary called Lil Bub and Friendz, which won the Tribeca Online Festival Best Feature Film award. Like Grumpy Cat, Lil Bub has a distinctive appearance caused by feline dwarfism.…

Cat Breeds & Choosing the Right Cat

Cat Breeds & Choosing the Right Cat

By Tom Hewitt Edited By April Jones How many cat breeds would you guess there are in the world? I didn’t have much of a clue until I investigated. I pretty much thought of all cats as just cats. But it turns out the answer isn’t totally straightforward—it depends on which authority you consult and how they define a breed. Plus, the answer often changes because new breeds are constantly being developed. The International Cat Association (TICA) currently recognizes seventy-one cat breeds for championship competition. Other bodies might answer the question differently; for example, the International Progressive Cat Breeders’ Alliance (IPCBA) lists, by my count, seventy-two breeds. At any rate, it’s safe to say the number of cat breeds is much lower than the number of dog breeds, which is in the hundreds.…

Feline Dental Health

Feline Dental Health

All Posts, Cat Blog Articles
Feline dental health is a very important and sometimes overlooked part of a cat's life. All cats should have their teeth examined as part of a regular physical every year and a dental exam done as needed. Cats have some dental issues that require intervention: resorption lesions and full mouth stomatitis.  Although dogs can get these diseases, they are more prevalent in cats. Resorption lesions cause tooth loss and affect 28-68% of adult cats (based on studies).  This disease leads to dental pain, tooth loss, decreased eating, salivation and head shaking.  The treatment for this disease is either tooth removal or crown removal.  Full mouth stomatitis is a painful disease where the entire mouth becomes inflamed  and raw; it is easily diagnosed by looking into the cat's mouth.  Although Felv…

The Great Litter Box Mystery

The Great Litter Box Mystery

All Posts, Cat Blog Articles, Happy Tails
by Alexis Meehan Edited by April Jones For fifteen years, I never once had litter box issues with my two cats, Melanie and Sheila. I used Ever Clean Multi-Cat Unscented litter in both of their standard-size litter boxes, and I kept them fairly clean. One morning, I noticed a small puddle on the floor next to one of the boxes. It was pee. I was a little surprised, but I figured that one of the cats must’ve had a small accident before she was able to jump into the box. I just mopped it up and wasn’t too concerned about it. My cats got regular checkups, and other than being aging kitties, they were both in good health. The next day, the small puddle was back. This time, I wondered…
