Your Cats’ First Week Home Pt.1 By Cece Gu I adopted two orange tabbies when they were about three months old. In my experience, orange tabbies are generally very friendly cats and are really easy to bond with. While I bonded with one of them within about three days, the other one was extremely shy with me. But our bond started to form about after two weeks as he got more confident in his new environment. Here are some tips for gently and effectively introducing new cats to you and your home. Tip #1: Give them space (don't force anything). Give them personal space once they get home. That means letting them take the lead and not chasing them when they run or when they are trying to hide. We started with small gestures, pets, treats, and gentle speaking to get her comfortable with being in her new environment at the shelter. In January, she was adopted by a family who was aware of her shyness and was willing to work with her at her home to socialize her, however, she unfortunately was returned for lack of progress. After 2 months of regimented Cat…

Cat Pawsitive Pro is our quintessential socialization program. From GreaterGood.org and the Jackson Galaxy Project, Cat Pawsitive Pro is an in-depth clicker training program designed for hard to adopt cats (yes, cats can be trained too!). At Town Cats, we knew we needed this program, but it is not an easy program to get into. We competed with shelters across the nation waiting a year or two to get one of the six available spots. Being fortunate to enter the program the first time around, we were very excited to be a part of the program, but we had our…
