Maddie’s Fund

Maddie’s Fund® is a family foundation established by Dave Duffield, the founder of Workday and PeopleSoft, and his wife, Cheryl. Named in honor of their beloved Miniature Schnauzer, Maddie, who passed away in 1997, the foundation is dedicated to creating a no-kill nation where all healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats are guaranteed a loving home.

To achieve this mission, Maddie’s Fund invests in a variety of initiatives: fostering community collaborations among animal welfare organizations to develop successful lifesaving models; partnering with veterinary colleges to integrate shelter medicine into veterinary curricula, ensuring future veterinarians are equipped to care for sick and injured shelter animals; and supporting national efforts to promote accountability and transparency in shelter operations.

Town Cats has had the privilege of partnering with Maddie’s Fund in multiple ways over the years, including participating in their annual pet adoption event from 2014 to 2016. Most recently, Maddie’s Fund supported our South Bay Kitten Project—a collaboration between Town Cats and the San Jose Animal Care Center to mobilize foster care for kittens during the busy “kitten season”. In recognition of Maddie’s Fund’s generous support, we named the program Maddie’s Kitten Foster Network. Additionally, many of our staff members have benefited from the training programs offered by Maddie’s Fund, which cover a wide range of cat care topics.

We are incredibly proud of our partnership with Maddie’s Fund and are eager to share the impact of their work. For those who may not be familiar, Maddie’s Fund’s mission is “to revolutionize the status and well-being of companion animals.” To learn more about their initiatives and how they support cats and dogs across the country, please visit www.maddiesfund.org.

Jackson Galaxy: Cat Pawsitive Program

Town Cats is thrilled to have been one of six shelters nationwide to participate in the fall 2018 session of the Jackson Galaxy Cat Pawsitive program. Cat Pawsitive is a clicker based training program aimed at harder to adopt cats. Volunteers and staff work one on one with the cat in the program to learn a variety of behaviors and skills all aimed at building confidence, increasing comfort levels, and ultimately helping the cat find their forever home. A committed group of staff and volunteers participated in the 8 week training program and now have the tools to carry the program on in our shelter for years to come.

Petco Foundation

The Petco Foundation believes every animal deserves to live its best life. Since 1999, more than $250 million has been invested in lifesaving animal welfare work to make this a reality. In partnership with over 4,000 animal welfare organizations, efforts are focused on empowering communities to make a difference through programs that support adoption, medical care, spay and neuter services, pet cancer research, service and therapy animals, and other vital initiatives. Through the Think Adoption First program, Petco stores and animal welfare groups nationwide work together to increase pet adoptions. To date, more than six million pets have found loving homes, with many more to come. Visit petcofoundation.org to learn how to get involved.

WeCARE: Community Alliance to Reduce Euthanasia

The founding agencies are Palo Alto Animal Services, San Jose Animal Care and Services, Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority, Town Cats Rescue, Humane Society Silicon Valley and the County of Santa Clara Animal Care and Control. Last year, the WeCare Alliance received the one million dollar Maddie’s Fund Lifesaving Award, and we are working hard to achieve an even more ambitious goal in the future.

Success will have been achieved when each healthy and/or treatable cat and dog entering any facility operated by an Alliance member, or any recognized rescue partner within the county, can be placed in a responsible and appropriate home and no dogs or cats are euthanized due to a lack of space or the passage of time.
