How To Adopt

*ADOPTION POLICY CHANGES AS OF 3/17/20- EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

-We will do adoptions by appointment ONLY. Please set an appointment by emailing adoptions@towncats.org.

-We will be updating our Facebook page with videos of our current cats and kittens up for adoption.

-We encourage you to fill out adoption applications online.

-Our preliminary interviews for adoption will occur through video. You will be able to meet with our adoption counselors and view our available cat you have placed interest.

-We are limiting people to essential staff and a single adopter to our main shelter. When visiting the shelter, we ask that you use shelter-provided hand sanitizer/wipes before entering our facility.

Town Cat’s Virtual Tour

During Shelter in Place, we are providing prospective adopters virtual live tours of our shelter so they can interact and get to know our cats safely from the comfort of their home. Once the applicants decide which cat or cats they would like to adopt and an application is filled out, a follow up appointment is scheduled for the applicants to come to the shelter, sign the contract, finalize payment, and take the cat home.  This is to ensure we are helping to keep everyone safe and healthy and minimize person to person contact.

A typical virtual tour is as follows:

  • Our adoption counselor makes contact with parties who are interested in adoption and schedules a phone/video appointment.
  • The adoption counselor then calls applicants on Facetime or phone during the scheduled appointment time and gives a general tour of the shelter and all the cats. This tour is quick and each cat is given a few minutes of screen time.
  • Extra time is spent with the cat(s) the applicant is particularly interested in.  This interaction may involve observing the cats playing with toys or other cats they room with.  The adoption counselor will also spend time petting, and holding the cat in order to showcase the cats level of confidence and demeanor.
  • During the tour, the applicant can ask questions about any of the cats they are interested in, to help finalize their decision.
  • The tour ends with a final Q & A, explanations of any special needs of the cat, followed by scheduling an appointment in person to take the cat home.
  • When applicants arrive at the shelter to pick up their cat, they are asked to ring the doorbell, and wait for the adoption counselor to let them in. Upon entering, they will be given hand sanitizer and gloves. Adoption counselor will remain 6 ft away from applicants at all times.
  • Applicants will sign the contract, finalize payment and take their kitty home!

Our most immediate concern is to place all cats and kittens in safe, loving, responsible, and permanent homes. Too often, wonderful animals end up in shelters because they weren’t a good match for their families from the beginning. We ask that potential adopters complete an application, go through a one-on-one interview with a Town Cats representative, agree to stay in touch with us, and pay the adoption fee which helps offset the costs of maintenance and medical care provided to all the cats we serve

We look for people who intend to provide a home for the ENTIRE life of the cat and understand what that requires. We try to match your needs with the type and temperament of animal that will best fit your lifestyle. Our cats are available for adoption by appointment from our foster homes, and you can also meet some of our cats in person at a local Petco, Petsmart or Pet Food Express. We have 8 offsite adoption locations, one of them is probably in your neighborhood. We show cats at Adoption Fairs at various times and locations, please email us.
