She was born in 2012 and has been featured in advertising—she even has her own webpage, licensed merchandise, and social media presence. But it turns out the answer isn’t totally straightforward—it depends on which authority you consult and how they define a breed. Plus, the answer often changes because new breeds are constantly being developed. The International Cat Association (TICA) currently recognizes seventy-one cat breeds for championship competition. Other bodies might answer the question differently; for example, the International Progressive Cat Breeders’ Alliance (IPCBA) lists, by my count, seventy-two breeds. At any rate, it’s safe to say the number of cat breeds is much lower than the number of dog breeds, which is in the hundreds.…

Feline dental health is a very important and sometimes overlooked part of a cat's life. All cats should have their teeth examined as part of a regular physical every year and a dental exam done as needed. Cats have some dental issues that require intervention: resorption lesions and full mouth stomatitis. Although dogs can get these diseases, they are more prevalent in cats. Resorption lesions cause tooth loss and affect 28-68% of adult cats (based on studies). This disease leads to dental pain, tooth loss, decreased eating, salivation and head shaking. The treatment for this disease is either tooth removal or crown removal. Here’s a picture of Gaby (cat) and Charlie (dog), who belonged to my family. They were introduced to each other when Gaby was an elderly cat and Charlie was in the middle of his life.Their maturity probably helped keep the meeting safe and low-key. Charlie was more enthusiastic about meeting Gaby than the other way around, so we made sure Gaby was safe when first exposed to Charlie. The kitten didn’t have a collar and was near a busy street.
