Volunteers Move Us Forward Written by Jose Parra At Town Cats, we operate cohesively as a team to effectively handle the day to day and prepare for the long term. Our tight-knit staff and board of directors work our magic to keep Town Cats ahead of the game and keep us agile at what we do best. Giving Tuesday allows us to fundraise for the future but prepare for tomorrow. However, It always benefits the cats of a shelter for a little extra attention and care, for a fully enriched life to express themselves as they would naturally. Volunteers do this beautifully in their separate ways, and we are incredibly thankful for their time! But in which methods do our exceptional volunteers assist us, you may ask? On-site at Town…

National Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month Written by Town Cats This year has surprised us all! From the uncertainty all around us to our loved ones' safety, this year has been challenging for all of us in some form. However, as we move forward together, we arrive at the most selfless time of November. This month, most of us think back to what or who we appreciate in our lives the most. In conjunction with National Adopt-A-Senior Month, we would love to take the time to talk about Town Cats' senior population and how we work to socialize them and match them to their forever homes!  Our beautiful Ginger is a Siamese / Mix female senior of eleven years and five months. Sheet Day – Time To Play!

Sheet Day - Time To Play! By C. M. Saracco Sometimes, I wonder why it takes me so long to make the bed on Saturdays.  But one look at Little Lizzie, our 3-year-old rescue cat, and I have my answer. You see, Saturday is “sheet day” in our house — the day I change the bedsheets.  It’s also the day Lizzie likes to exercise her predatory instincts. As soon as I strip the bed, she jumps on it, wide-eyed and enthusiastic.  She braces herself for the unfurling of the fitted sheet, attacking each corner as I attempt to tuck it around the mattress. This can take several minutes, as adjusting the sheet with a 12-pound cat running across it is no quick task. Next, I slip the pillows into their…

Some of you have already been fostering cats and have had a lot of success adopting out your foster kitties. As you know, the number of cats needing homes can sometimes seem endless!  So, here are a few tips that might help even more kittens and cats find their forever homes. Let’s get to it! It is good to differentiate between a kitty cold and a more serious underlying condition that could require more…

Cats and Classical Music

Cats and Classical Music by Giselle Stancic As a cat adopter and classical musician, I’ve long been intrigued by the influence of our feline friends on composers and their music. Cats hold a special place in keyboard, vocal, orchestral, and contemporary music.  Going back in history, one of the earliest cat-inspired compositions was Domenico Scarlatti’s “Cat’s Fugue” from 1739. As the story goes, the composer’s cat wrote the melody as she walked across the harpsichord keyboard. Here’s a piano version. Can you hear the kitty on the keys? Moving into the 19th century, Gioachino Rossini’s “Duetto Buffo di Due Gatti” consists of one word —   you guessed it —  “meow.” Check out this performance by opera sopranos Kiri Te Kanawa and Norma Burrows, complete with a little playful purring. …

From Fearful To Friendly! By C. M. Saracco He appeared near our porch one day:  a shy, striped grey cat.  Crouched beneath a bush, he eyed the empty food bowl that I’d left out for a neighboring stray. When I called him, he hissed and ran. I went inside, refilled the bowl, and placed it on the porch.  My mystery guest was nowhere to be seen.  But a few minutes after I retreated into the kitchen, he crept towards the bowl. Young and slim, he had a clipped left ear, which told me he was a feral or stray male who’d been trapped, neutered, and released.  By the looks of it, this kitty was well under a year old. Weeks passed before I could get close enough even to take…
