September 11, 2018 By Nikita Lero Founded in 1997, Town Cats has been saving stray, abandoned, unwanted and feral cats in Santa Clara County, California, since day one and hopes to save even more with the help of The Jackson Galaxy Project’s Cat Pawsitive Pro (CPP). They had learned about CPP and its benefits when they looked into having Jackson Galaxy host an event at the shelter. Samantha Sullivan, Executive Director at Town Cats, explains just how important CPP is to their community and shelter. “There is nothing like this in the area and it truly will revolutionize the way we work harder to adopt cats,” says Sullivan. “By working closely with our network of shelters and implementing CPP, we will help these cats gain confidence and get them adopted,…

By Tom Hewitt Edited by Alexis Meehan Most of the time, a cat will be wary of a strange dog, but if they have the chance to get accustomed to one another (usually as pets inside a household), cats and dogs can become the best of friends. Here’s a picture of Gaby (cat) and Charlie (dog), who belonged to my family. They were introduced to each other when Gaby was an elderly cat and Charlie was in the middle of his life.Their maturity probably helped keep the meeting safe and low-key. by Tom Hewitt Edited by April Jones In the late 90s, as I was finishing up high school, my mother found a stray kitten while on a walk in Gilroy. The kitten didn’t have a collar and was near a busy street. After asking around to see if the kitten had an owner, my mother brought the gray tabby home to become friends with the two cats we already had, Furball and Firefly. As it turned out, Grant (that's what we named her) wanted to be outside nearly all the time, only disturbing us by pawing at the back door when she was hungry. She found an area underneath our pool deck to hide in, and rarely left the backyard. Grant lived a long time—about fifteen years—and only became an…

The Great Litter Box Mystery

by Alexis Meehan Edited by April Jones For fifteen years, I never once had litter box issues with my two cats, Melanie and Sheila. I used Ever Clean Multi-Cat Unscented litter in both of their standard-size litter boxes, and I kept them fairly clean. One morning, I noticed a small puddle on the floor next to one of the boxes. It was pee. I was a little surprised, but I figured that one of the cats must’ve had a small accident before she was able to jump into the box. I just mopped it up and wasn’t too concerned about it. My cats got regular checkups, and other than being aging kitties, they were both in good health. The next day, the small puddle was back. This time, I wondered…

By Tara McNabb Edited by April Jones Introducing a new cat to your home can be an exciting experience for everyone involved. But it’s important to remember that your new friend may be feeling the very opposite of excitement; cats are incredibly sensitive to changing environments, and they often experience heightened anxiety when put into a new living situation. The last thing you want to do is unknowingly cause more stress for your new friend due to a lack of preparation. By following these simple tips, you can make the transition process easier for both of you. 1. Cat Proof the House Before you bring them home, do a walk-through of your house from a cat’s point of view. Although it may be impossible to eliminate all potential trouble areas…
